 Who is the course for:

This course is designed for people who:

  • want to try/start digital painting,

  • want to use digital painting as an aid to their traditional (oil, watercolor, etc) painting workflow,

  • want to start painting, without the expense/hassle of buying/storing brushes, oils, turpentine, etc.

  • want to paint anywhere (a park, while travelling, waiting room) using just a PC,

  • veteran digital painters who wish to evaluate Krita,

  • retirees (and people with free time), who wish to have a new hobby, which is easy to do and satisfying in a creative way.

How is the course designed:

The course provides a practical and simplified (“for dummys/beginners” like) explanation and guide on to how to use Krita.

The student is shielded from difficult complex operations and too-much-information overflow.

By attending this course, the student:

  • can avoid spending a lot of time self-learning,

  • and learn how to paint digital art with easy-to-use Krita features and tools.

After the course, the student should be able to paint using Krita. Easy-to-understand graphics and step-by-step actual operations are performed/explained on a projector screen.

Student requirement:

1.PC (preferable with WIFI but not mandatory as exercises will mostly be offline):

  • Preferably a student should have a PC pre-loaded with Krita.

    • Instructions on how to download Krita will be provided prior to the course. The student can ask another person (e.g., child, grandson, friend) to do the downloading/installation before the class.

  • A student without a PC can also attend. He/she can still learn by listening to the lectures and following the demonstrations on the screen; but will not be able to do hands-on exercises. The student can then decide after the course whether or not to procure a PC to do Krita work.

  • The course contents is based on Krita version 2.9.7. (Note: A student may opt to use another version, but there may be differences. The teacher is not familiar with other versions.)

  • The Windows version of Krita will be used. (Note: A student can elect to use the Linux version, but there may be some differences. The teacher is not familiar with Linux.)

2.Tablet:

  • Preferable each student with a PC should have a WACOM Tablet.

  • An Intuos Wacom tablet is fine.

  • The Cintiq Wacom tablet (which has a write-able screen) is even better.( It normally cost much more.)

  • A student with a PC but without a tablet will likely be able to do the exercises using a mouse; but with limitations.

  • Note: Some PC with stylus sensitive screen can be used (e.g., I also use Lenovo X201;
the stylus works but has not pressure-sensitive or tilt features.)

  • Note: There are tablets other than Wacom. There is no guarantee that they will work like Wacom tablets.

  • Note: “Pen mouse” are being sold. The teacher has not used them. One article mentioned that
they are not easier to use than a standard mouse

3. Writing material (notebook, writing pad) for taking notes.

Student Course-Guide:

A Course-Guide will be provided to the students. This guide, contains a summary of the course sessions, instructrions for  the student exercises, as well as some textual guides to Krita operations and tools.

Book:

A book called Manny's Krita Basics is being developed. If available at the time of the course, it can be purchased by the students. This book contains (almost all) the slides used by the teacher during the course, as well as textual explanations. This book is a good reference book for use during and after the course. If available at the time, a student can buy this book before, during or after the course.

.....

Attendance certificate:

At the end of the course, each student will be given an Attendance Certificate; which becomes a proof that the student had attended the course to study digital painting using Krita.
